Regarding Today's Contempt of Congress Vote
Feb. 14, 2008
"A vote was cast today in the U.S. House of Representatives to hold former White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers in contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with a congressional investigation into the firing of U.S. Attorneys.
"This is a serious matter, and Congress must get to the bottom of these firings. When the crimes strike at the core of our criminal justice system, as was in this case, we are all victims.
"Yet, instead of siding with justice and transparency, my opponent, Rep. Judy Biggert (R-13th district) chose instead to 'walk out' on her constituents. Her actions are yet another confirmation of her apparent belief that the White House is immune from scrutiny.
"Congressperson Biggert took an oath of office to protect the constitution, but continually flaunts her party loyalty, even when it recklessly disregards the rule of law. We will remain a great and prosperous nation only if we continue to have executive and legislative branches that choose the rule of law over corruption.
"Kicking the perpetrators of corruption out of the White House this November is not enough...'We the People' must take back our Congress as well."
